we’ve been at the frontier of flavor- for 50+ years

Our Beginnings

THE YEAR WAS 1972

Portland was abuzz with creative energy; its DIY spirit was breaking through to inspire musicians, artists, and free spirits like our founder Steven Smith. Stirred by the lush forests of the Pacific Northwest and the emerging culture of craft, he tapped into his love of botanicals and followed flavor wherever it led.

Back then, Steven was a Portlandler moved by tea’s natural power to deliver joy and wellness. Today, he’s remembered as a tea visionary who helped redefine how Americans experience tea. And it all started with Stash. Each cup we craft is still infused with a little of his philosophy.

Deliciously Inventive

From inventing the cult-classic Lemon Ginger flavor to being the first to harness the fragrant power of Pacific Northwest mint, we've never stopped innovating in pursuit of flavor.

ingredient obsessed

We're picky so you don't have to be. We search the world for natural ingredients that are delightfully satisfying.

masterfully crafted

Our expertise is in blending and pairing. Layering botanicals in bold ways is how we started and it's where we keep redefining tea.

After quickly finding success, the founders moved into a Pearl District warehouse to begin blending loose leaf tea in a humble cement mixer.

Stash is the first to recognize Pacific Northwest's wild mint as tea-worthy and works with farmers to raise growing standards.

Stash launches a pioneering mail-order service, delivering tea directly to college campuses nationwide.

Expansion takes off in Los Angeles thanks to a key partnership with Yamamotoyama. As the oldest family-owned tea company in Japan, Yamamotoyama carries a legacy dating back to 1690.

Their innovations—introducing Sencha to the masses and creating Gyokuro—revolutionized green tea worldwide.

Signature flavors Lemon Ginger and Chai — now classics in the tea aisle — are concocted.

Acquired by global tea leader Yamamotoyama, Stash gains resources to grow bigger than ever.

Stashtea.com launches, becoming an early go-to source for tea knowledge online.

By the millennium, our collection tops 300 different types of tea. Many that were brand-new to the U.S. tea scene will become everyday staples.

Stash welcomes Nami Yamamoto as CEO to lead the next era of growth.

Our teas earn non-GMO Project certification, affirming our commitment to mindful sourcing.

Tea Latte concentrates debut on the shelves, bringing café-style flavor home.

Stash unveils a bold new look to match our modern vision.
