Here's a short course in the four types of ceramics:
Bone China, although it may look fine and fragile, is the strongest type of ceramics. The addition of bone ash accounts for its durability.
Porcelain looks delicate as well but is actually resistant to chips or breaks.
Stoneware is solid and sturdy, typically less formal than bone china or porcelain. A variety of glazes can produce diverse products.
Earthenware is casual and more porous due to being fired at a lower temperature. However, it takes well to glazes which produce a sturdier product.
